As part of my Houdini Water FX training course, provided by Rebelway Academy, one of the modules creates a whale jump using unskinned geometry of an animated whale.
After watching Avatar: The Way Of Water, the final scene of a Tolkran (Pandoran Whale) leaping from the water with a sunset backdrop inspired me to create my own version of an earth whale doing this.
Applying the techniques learned during the Rebelway course and multiple real world scenes of whale’s leaping in the ocean as reference, I created this scene with two separate angles. I am especially pleased with the shader I created for the ocean, which captures the colours and reflective / refractive properties of the ocean waves so beautifully.
